An American Vernacular

Windgate Gallery, University of Arkansas. 2018. Nelson’s faux-naive paintings depict simplified figures—dolls, puppets, and figurines—that feel familiar. While they echo outsider art, they incorporate faint text and decorative patterns that evoke subconscious associations. Though childlike in form, the work is not innocent. It’s layered with cryptic language and explores the tension between expression, symbols, and the psyche. Influenced by American folk artists, Nelson reimagines outsider aesthetics through a postmodern lens, creating narrative-driven, text-infused pieces.
